چکیده

2. Materials and Methods We attached a color marker on each instrument tip so that the position of the marker in the image can be found in real-time by simple color segmentation. In fact, however, the original color of the instrument may be often lost due to too strong illumination, which is a problem particular to endoscopic images. We coped with this problem by utilizing the brightness components of laparoscopic images to fill up the gap of the intrinsic color information.

Towards Video Understanding of Laparoscopic Surgery: Instrument Tracking

Endoscopic surgery routinely produces video data. Automated understanding of these data has applications both online (visual servoing for telemanipulation) and offline (procedure analysis, annotation and content-based retrieval). As a step towards such applications, a method for tracking surgical instruments in endoscopic video without modifications to instruments or endoscopic equipment is des...

Automatic Detection of Instruments in Laparoscopic Images: A First Step Towards High-level Command of Robotic Endoscopic Holders

The tracking of surgical instruments offers interesting possibilities for the development of high-level commands for robotic camera holders in laparoscopic surgery. We have developed a new method to detect instruments in laparoscopic images which uses information on the 3D position of the insertion point of an instrument into the abdominal cavity. This information strongly constrains the search...

A New Algorithm for the Visual Tracking of Surgical Instruments in Robot - assisted Laparoscopic Surgery

We proposed a novel algorithm for instrument segmentation in the robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) images, which will be used for tool tracking to automatically preventing hazardous situations. The proposed algorithm achieved 1mm range of average RMSE of tool tip position in various conditions, which is significantly lower value compared to the previous methods.

Visual Instrument Guidance in Minimally Invasive Robot Surgery

Surgical tool tracking is an important key functionality for many high-level tasks such as the visual guidance of surgical instruments or automated camera control. Readings from robot encoders and the kinematic chain are usually error prone in this kind of complex setup, but still allow for a coarse pose estimation of the instruments in image space. This information can be utilized to (re-)init...

Model-based 3-D Pose Estimation and Feature Tracking for Robot Assisted Surgery with Medical Imaging

In this paper we address the problem of the pose estimation based on multiple geometrical features for monocular endoscopic vision with laparoscopes and for stereotaxy with CT scanners. Partial and full pose estimation (6 dofs) are considered with applications to minimally invasive surgery. At the University of Strasbourg, we have been developing a set of techniques for assisting surgeons in na...
